Position Summary: Assistant General Secretary

The Bargaining Council is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced individual to the role of Assistant General Secretary. The successful candidate will provide high-level administrative, operational, and strategic support to the General Secretary, while gaining exposure to the full range of Council functions,
including governance, compliance, financial oversight, and stakeholder engagement. This role offers an excellent opportunity for an individual looking to develop within a senior leadership environment in the labour relations sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct support to the General Secretary in the execution of Council operations

  • Assist with the preparation and coordination of Council meetings, including documentation and reporting

  • Support compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements

  • Assist in the preparation and review of financial and operational reports

  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including unions, employer organisations, and Council representatives

  • Support the implementation and application of labour legislation

  • Contribute to strategic and operational initiatives of the Council

  • Perform delegated functions as required by the General Secretary

Requirements

Education

  • Grade 12 / Matric

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Labour Relations or related field

  • Postgraduate qualification (advantageous)

  • Master’s Degree in Labour Relations (preferred)

Experience

  • Minimum 5–7 years relevant experience

  • Experience within a Bargaining Council or labour relations environment (advantageous)

  • Exposure to governance, compliance, and stakeholder engagement

Competencies

  • Sound knowledge of labour legislation

  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills

  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and discretion

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability

  • Ability to operate effectively in a complex, stakeholder-driven environment

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

  • Professional qualification (CA(SA), CIMA, ACCA or similar) advantageous

Experience

  • Minimum 5–7 years’ relevant experience in finance and administration

  • Experience in financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance

  • Exposure to audit processes

  • Experience in a regulated or governance-driven environment advantageous

Technical Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of IFRS and financial reporting standards

  • Experience with accounting systems (Microsoft Dynamics & SAP preferred) and advanced Excel skills required

  • Understanding of payroll systems (SAGE/VIP advantageous)

  • Strong organisational and planning ability

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

Remuneration
Basic Salary R54 725.00
Travel Allowance R10 636.00
Cell Phone Allowance R1548.00
Pension (6% Employer and 6% Employee Contribution)

Remuneration may be structured flexibly on a Cost-to-Company basis, subject to mutual agreement
and Council policy
